Breve historia del escudo de la ciudad de Valencia

El escudo de la ciudad de Valencia es en forma de rombo y lo forman cuatro franjas verticales de color rojo, sobre fondo amarillo. Está coronado y sobre esta corona sobrevuela un murciélago con las alas extendidas. A los lados del cairó, (del rombo) aparecen dos L en mayúsculas que también llevan corona . A su vez el escudo está rodeado por dos ramas de laurel.

Hasta el reinado de Pedro el Ceremonioso, la ciudad utilizó un escudo alusivo a su emplazamiento, una ciudad amurallada sobre olas. Este es el emblema que aparece representado en uno de los primeros sellos municipales (1312) y el que está la puerta gótica de la Catedral. Este mismo rey fue el que añadió una L a cada lado del escudo, simbolizando la lealtad de la ciudad en los dos asedios que sufrió en la guerra contra Pedro el Cruel de Castilla.
Ya en el siglo XVII, en algunos aparecía la figura del murciélago, y sobre éste hay numerosas leyendas que explican su porqué, todas ellas relacionadas con el asedio de la ciudad por las tropas de Jaume I el Conquistador.

Desde el fina de la Guerra de la Independencia Española el escudo tiene dos ramas de laurel que simbolizan la defensa de la ciudad ante el general francés Moncey.

From the fine-Spanish War of Independence the shield has two laurel branches symbolizing the defense of the city to the French general Moncey.
