Si usted está de visita en nuestra ciudad no debe perder la oportunidad de visitar el Mercado Central, situado entre la plaza del Mercado, al lado de la Lonja de la Seda y la plaza de la ciudad de Brujas, su horario de apertura es de 7:30 de la mañana a 14:30 horas, todos los días excepto los domingos.
El edificio del Mercado Central es una construcción de estilo modernista empezada a construir en el año 1914 por Francesc Guàrdia i Vial y Alexandre Soler i March. A partir de 2004 y tras una importante presión por parte de la ciudadanía se comienza su rehabilitación que correrá a cargo del estudio madrileño Fernández del Castillo Arquitectos, dirigido por Horacio Fernández del Castillo. Gracias a esta intervención hoy podemos admirarlo en el esplendor de su belleza.
En el Mercado Central se combina el metal con el vidrio, y sus columnas hacen un guiño a la lonja y al gótico, como si de una catedral del comercio se tratara. El centro del edificio se corona con una gran cúpula y su veleta.
Existe una asociación de comerciantes del Mercado Central, en el que se vende todo tipo de alimentos como pescado, mariscos, frutas, carnes y embutidos. Además se suelen poner en marcha distintas actividades y cursos.
